Matters regarding air conditioning |
Wayne Ryan (Air Con Serve)
Wayne Ryan was responsible for the
installation and commissioning of the Shaw Method of Air
Conditioning (SMACTM) at the West Wing of the Art
Gallery of South Australia. This project has been
selected by the Cooperative Research Centre for
inclusion in their 2004/2005 Case Studies and can be
viewed at www.brite.crcci,info and as Case Study No 10.
This project has delivered a World Class outcome of 75%
reduction in heating energy 58% reduction in cooling
energy, 15% peak electrical local reduction,
proportionate reduction in cooling tower water and
chemical usage, substantial enhancement to temperature
and humidity control and has a 2 to 3 year pay back.
SMACTM is an Australian invention that will reduce air
conditioning energy by 20 to 80% on commercial buildings
air conditioning either on new installations or as a
retrofit. The inventor was the late Dr. Allan Shaw.

CH2
CH2 (‘Council House 2’) is a visionary new building in
Melbourne with the potential to change forever the way
Australia – indeed the world – approaches ecologically
sustainable design.
The design and construction of CH2
integrates sustainable technologies in all aspects of its
10 storeys. These aspects include: a water-mining plant in
the basement, phase-change material for cooling, automatic
night-purge windows, vaulted concrete ceilings, a façade
of recycled timber shutters (powered by photovoltaic
cells) that track the sun. Construction began early in
2004 but already the design stage of the building has
received an official rating of six stars – world leader
status – from the Green Building Council of Australia and
demonstrates new standards in how buildings can deliver
financial, social and environmental outcomes.
The half-day Adelaide workshop will also
discuss local Adelaide green commercial projects including
the new City Central development project, presented by
Darren Bilsborough (Lincolne Scott). This project will provide a leading example
for the Australian property industry, setting new
standards in environmental sustainability, workplace
design and social connectivity. The workshop will also
discuss specific local government sustainability
initiatives from the wider Adelaide region.

Workshop 2.B
Towards Zero Waste –
What’s the bottom line?
Zero Waste
SA’s relocation to Statewide House in the Adelaide CBD
using ‘green’ principles provides an opportunity to
demonstrate leadership and establish standards for future
relocation projects within existing office buildings –
whether for government or the private sector.
This session
will address who is delivering on the Greening of
Government agenda, what are the costs and why does it
matter.
It will also
discuss the organisational processes involved in planning
and implementing a ‘green’ relocation and fitout project
and compare the up front and lifecycle costs of
undertaking a green fitout with a traditional approach.

The session will be facilitated by Zero
Waste SA Chief Executive Vaughan Levitzke.

Workshop 2.C
Environmental Imperatives for
Fitout Items
This session will
provide the fitout industry with relevant information on
the environmental agenda as it is impacting their
operations and services and the opportunities available to
provide assistance or communicate initiatives.
